A number of players on social and here in forums have asked for more information about the "latency tolerance", what this all means, and what else can be done. In practice, our builds are deployed to a subset of those regions due to availability. More specifically… All regions: The Xbox Live latency rules we currently use base the allowable matchmaking datacenters on your lowest ping time.

For example, in our office the lowest ping time I have is South US at 51ms. The latency expansion rule is currently configured as: For my local kit, this ultimately covers all possible dedicated server regions, but does require some waiting. We recognize this expansion cycle, while following a more traditional pattern, takes time to expand and is suboptimal. For example, for these ping times: This no longer requires lengthy expansion cycles, and should significantly reduce wait times for players in lower population regions.

This change has been given the thumbs up from Test and we hope to roll it out soon. The more options you select, the more possible games and gametypes you can match into. The more you limit and refine your search criteria, the more you shrink the pool of potential players to match. This new feature will allow for quick matches similar to previous playlists through the use of presets and by customizing your own play experience.

The Match Composer will then search and match you with other players who have chosen the same selections. These are pre-configured selections that allow players to jump into right matches quickly.

Here is a list of the Match Composer presets currently available:. The team is always listening to player feedback and will be monitoring things closely now that Match Composer is out in the wild. Our goal is to offer the most currently-popular modes while not making the system overly complex or splitting the population up so much that it degrades the matchmaking experience.

In addition to the Match Composer, the team has also implemented expanded controller customization options to allow players to better fine-tune their experience.

Lone Wolves is moving out of social and will find its new home in the competitive ranked playlists. Changes will be happening to our Ranked Playlists as we have been monitoring the health of them for a while and will be moving some of them out based on low engagement.

We also have updated maps in the Halo 3 Team Arena playlist to include some fan favorites that have been requested. Our guy on the inside, Sean "Scoops" Cooper, is back with another tale from the Halo engineering trenches and some interesting bug work regarding a pesky medical scanner:. This bug is a symptom of the actual cause. But first a history lesson. He has also worked on the Halo games since Halo 3. See Exhibit A below. I believe at the time he was claiming this was a bug they fixed in ODST. I took a mental note and carried on with what I was doing. So I pulled up the Marine character and looked at said set of properties. See Exhibit C again. Everything there checked out.

With my head wrapped around the data and the code, I set forth to debug the code in action. I found where it tries to create the activity objects and slapped down a breakpoint. Thankfully, the particular vignette is right at the beginning of the level, and in this case wound up being the first thing to hit the conditions of the breakpoint.

Here, I started inspecting the game state and the asset data that was loaded. Another pass at the code and it became clear as to why. Another asset in level would need to have strong reference would for it to be included into the map file. The desire for this kind of asset resolution is understandable.

There are a couple of ways to solve for this, but I want to do some more investigation first. You also need the CPU resources to process everything. The games are very complex ecosystems.
