I'm new to the site, just wanted to say how useful this thread has been image: Just checking I read this correct - In the UK the live at a camp site is the same as a standard 3 pin mains plug, eg on the right as you look at the socket. So if abroad and I tested the socket as I have a live tester and it was on the left then that is when I use a reverse polarity unit? Reverse polarity wont damage any electrical equipment - the problem is the fuse in the plug is on the "right" side.

So if the socket is reverse wired, you lose the fuse protection. It seems to me that the simple answer to this is, bite the bullet go to a good camping outlet get the proper advise get the proper product. What you save messing about trying to save a bob or is not the answer. They are fantastic very easy to use and can be used both at campsite and at home.

My understanding is that it needs to be high visibility, but can it be a yellow or must it be yellow? Also wonder if anyone has seen http: Seems to tick all the boxes in terms of safety etc? Any opinions on it? Thanks BTW for this and other threads. Have been lurking for a while and finaly registered to make his post, and I hope make some contributions in the future. Wow, well organised Sam!

Electricity on campsites fair usage

I think I was that organised once, before I had kids: Now it seems much harder. Back to the question, yes go for the 3 socket, if you don't you'll probably wish you had later. I've read a fair bit of this thread but admittedly not all of it! What type of electrical connection must I have to have use of an electric hook up in a Tent, Trailer Tent or Older Unit? Please remember that all appliances that are plugged in must not consume more than a total of 10 amps in total, and must be specifically designed for use in a tent.

Normal household appliances must not be used. All appliances have a wattage marked on them, ideally the maximum wattage should be no more than to watts. We reserve the right to decline any equipment that we deem to be unsuitable for use. So with that lot in mind can anyone recommend me an EHU unit and the best value place to buy one from? Is this a fairly low limit or the norm? Covered sockets are meant to stop water spray from getting in, so covered is better You can't take chances with electrics outdoors: Pressing the 'test' button only makes sure the device trips at the right current; it doesn't test the trip time The light you're referring to is the one I mentioned in my post Incredibly, very few EHUs actually have proper documentation and I had the same question as you when I got my last one and the light didn't come on.

The only people I know who experienced the warning light coming on were camping in France and it turned out checking using their handy digital multi-meter that sure enough the French EHU post had been wired back-to-front! Oh dear, new to having the luxury of electric whilst camping.

Considering purchasing one, however, having two children, safety is important, are the cheap ones safe? Thanks for your input, the one you stated is safe the others looked just like an extention lead you use at home. I was reading an article today in the latest Camping and Caravanning Club magazine re: EHU do's and don'ts. It echoed a lot that's been said here, plus the fact that the 13A sockets are only watertight when shut; i. As soon as you open the sealed lid and plug an appliance in the seal is compromised.

12/3/2014 10 Step Guide to Electric Hook Up

I'm planning to call into the Scotland branch on my way home but don't want a wasted journey: Sorry if this has already been covered, theres a lot of pages on this thread and I was going blind reading them all! Imgine you are plugged in, its night time and something chews through the cable.

From the hook up to the severed cable would still be live wouldn't it? Or am I misunderstanding these units? Surely a unit manufactured with one of these as near to the plug as possible would be best? Are you able to send me a link to where I can buy this? As a newbie to camping, we are going on only our second camping trip August bank holiday. The site we are booked up with only had EHU pitches left.

I though it better to make use of this, so I decided to get a EHU cable for the tent mainly for our camping fridge. It seemed to have all the requirements that people have recommended, however when I got it home, I realised i couldn't plug a 'standard' house plug into it it had the 3 pin inlet. I therefore, bought what I thought was a suitable adaptor from my local outdoor store, it's the same as this one from Ebay the one at the top of the pic.

The trouble is, the adaptor won't line up with the inlet on the cable. What do people think of this? Looks different to some of the other ones mentioned in this thread? These were mentioned in a thread lately and I seem to remember that some doubts were raised about them. One concern that I would have is the 1. New to camping and new to this site.

Yes you can use it. Sites in France do differ, the one we were on last year had correct polarity, UK style sockets, and the EHU was close enough.

Enter your details to access your Booking

Is the polarity reversed? Do they have UK or conitinental sockets? How far is the pitch from the EHU? Some French ones are quite a distance from the pitch. If they don't have the answers, a http: You can buy a short lead to reverse the polarity, or make up one yourself. If the sockets are continental type, you need one of http: If you need extra cable to reach the EHU, one of http: Thanks to the advice I have taken on board from this forum, I am about to become an electric tent!!!

I am looking to be able to operate my 12V coolbox.

camping electric hook up | eBay

That seems a bit steep to me. People have said we need IP rated ones, ive not found any that say they are? Also i have a small Philips travel kettle that used uptto w, will this be suitable for use on a campsite? These look good http: They did look good until i saw the price!!!!!! After doing a lot of reading during my lunch hour at work, I've seen a couple of people ask about using one of these; http: Please can someone put my mind at rest. We've never used an electric hook up when camping before. You can get them cheaper online or from other camping retailers, but not a lot.

Using any other sort of home made lead is 1 Probably not safe and 2 Not allowed by camp sites. The one on the reel will take up a lot more space in the car, and when in use it must be fully unwound otherwise it is liable to overheat, so I cannot see any practical advantage of it. We're now hooked on using an electric hook up and wonder if anyone knows of a list of campsites with EHU for tents?

I've just ordered one. The colour isn't really important, but orange seems to be the norm as far as bing visible it stands out quite well so I guess that is the reason. I've seen all the colours you mention in use.

  • They were gone the day after. Onthe subject of unwinding the cable i once ran a hot air gun drying a floor for around 15 minutes before it stopped, when i inspected the partly unwound extension it was all welded together inside an almost on fire so i always leave the EHU cable loose on the ground under the van. My EHU from camperlands has arrived today!

It is the 3 point Sunncamp one. Can we just go on friday and plug it into the campsite box? Have already paid for the service of course! At least you know you are using something that is safe, not like some of the junk that is being sold. Exciting that after 10 years of camping I will actually be able to see at night by a decent light AND have a quicker cuppa!
